Tamarac Middle School students participated in an awareness presentation about stuttering. Students heard from Pamela Mertz from Questar III BOCES, who spoke to them about growing up with a stutter and the obstacles she has overcome to be a confident adult with a stutter. Mertz’s fun and interactive presentation educated the students about stuttering, allowed them to ask questions and explained many false ideas people have about it. The students also participated in numerous hands-on activities that helped them understand what it might feel like to have an impairment like stuttering.
The presentation aligned with November’s character education trait of cooperation and how we all need to cooperate in being kind, caring and serve as “allies” to each other in our school community.
