Brunswick eNews: District Closure March 17 through April 1 (PLEASE READ)

Dear Tamarac Families:

Although there are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 amongst our students and staff, out of an abundance of caution, ALL Brunswick CSD schools will be CLOSED from Tuesday, March 17 through Wednesday, April 1. Due to the rapidly changing nature of COVID-19 cases and the information surrounding the spread of this illness, superintendents in the Questar III BOCES region of Rensselaer, Columbia and Greene counties collectively decided to cancel all classes during this time period. All athletic practices, extracurricular activities, and district events are canceled from Tuesday, March 17 through Friday, March 27. PLEASE NOTE THAT CLASSES FOR ALL BRUNSWICK CSD SCHOOLS WILL STILL BE IN SESSION ON MONDAY, MARCH 16.

This week’s schedule provides our teaching staff with time to prepare instructional materials and resources for students in the event of a longer-term closing. It also allows our students to clean out their lockers and bring home their belongings, including digital devices, instruments and other items.

In anticipation of a potential district closure, many Brunswick CSD teachers have already sent home academic materials for your students to engage in self-guided learning during this time. These assignments are resources to engage students in the absence of regular school instruction. Many of our students also have accounts to online resources provided by the district that can be accessed at home, including: iReady, ReadyGen, Razz Kids, Xtra Math, Castle Learning, Kurzweil, and others. We encourage students and families to reach out to their building principals and/or specific teachers should they have any questions regarding the supplemental learning materials used during this time period.

All scheduled CSE Meetings for this week will be held over the phone. Please check our website and social media channels for any updates regarding parent meetings.

If you do not have access to the Internet, Spectrum is offering free internet access to Capital Region households with K-12 students during this unprecedented event. This is a 60-day offer only available to households that aren’t already Spectrum customers. This will include free WiFi access. To obtain this service, you can contact Spectrum at 1-855-243-8892.

We understand that closing schools for over a week places a heavy burden on the families in our district. With this in mind, we are making arrangements in our district and community to continue our breakfast and lunch program, with a special emphasis on our students that receive free or reduced lunch. If you receive these services, we will be in contact with you in the coming days. Please note: ANY STUDENT in our district that is in need of a meal will receive a meal. Details will be forthcoming.

Please continue to check our district website, Facebook, and Twitter for updates as this is a very fluid situation. We are continuing to follow the guidance of the governor’s office, the New York State Department of Health, and the U.S. Department of Education for guidance regarding instructional time, academic resources, and test scheduling, and we will be updating our information as it comes.

Once again, thank you all for your continued understanding and support. We are so “Bengal Proud” to work with such wonderful students and families. We truly feel this measure is essential in helping prevent and combat the spread of COVID-19 in our community and the greater Capital Region, and our number one goal is always caring for your children and keeping them safe. We will work consistently throughout the coming weeks to reschedule and recreate educational and meaningful events so that your children will have similar experiences to those that would have occurred prior to this unprecedented event. Please know that we are here for you, and we will do all that is necessary to keep things as normal as possible for you and your family.

We also encourage you and your family to continue using best hygiene practices to help stop the spread. If you or your family believes they are exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19, you can reach out to the COVID-19 hotline at 1-888-364-3065 or contact your healthcare provider.
