Dear Secondary School Families:

Getting out of my car this morning, I was greeted in the parking lot with, “Happy Prom Friday, Mr. Rizzo!” It was a nice reminder of the energy and excitement in the air today for this very special event. The prom will begin at 6pm and conclude at 10pm. Please be mindful of pickup and drop off times if you are providing transportation. Kindly reinforce good decision making, especially on the winding roads this evening. The forecast looks spectacular for the middle of May - we are looking forward to a fun and memorable event at Crooked Lake for all of our juniors and seniors!

Character Education: Congratulations to all of our Bengal Award winners for the month of April through Mid May. Michael Rotondi received a very special award after his name was drawn. Great job by all!

College Caravan: The College Caravan is back! 20 schools are expected to be joining us on the morning of May 20th. They will be stationed in front of the building on the curb (weather permitting). This will be a tremendous opportunity for our juniors to meet face to face with college representatives and begin planning for life after Tamarac. Thank you to our amazing counseling center for organizing this event!

Erin’s Law Presentation: In 2019, NY State became the 37th state to adopt Erin’s Law into legislation. On May 25th and 26th our middle school students will have a guest presenter from St. Peter’s Healthcare Partners speak with them about personal safety. This presentation is part of Erin’s Law - a New York State requirement for schools to make K-8 students aware of personal safety and what to do if they feel unsafe. We want to encourage parents to have open dialogue with your child on this topic. Please reach out to your child’s counselor if you have any questions.

6-8 State Assessment Data: Each spring we reach out to parents to encourage participation in 3-8 ELA, math, and science testing. State assessments provide us with important information that we use to support your child and to evaluate our instructional practices and programming. This data is also important for parents/guardians to monitor your child’s academic progress. If you are a parent/guardian of a current 7th-9th grader who took last year's exams, please email your counselor if you would like a copy of the report. (kryan@brunswickcsd.org, sfulgan@brunswickcsd.org, or pcollins@brunswickcsd.org). Each report is specifically geared for parents/guardians and contains very helpful information.

HVCC Summer Enrichment: Hudson Valley Community College will be offering Head Start Courses in Math and Writing this summer at no cost to students.  Both programs are designed to give students the chance to brush up on these skills, and learn about the college and our academic resources. Students can choose an online or in-person session.  The online session will run from July 5 through August 12.  In-person courses will run on weekdays from August 15 through 25.

Attached is a flyer with more information.   You may contact the office of Community & Professional Education with questions  at 518-629-7339 or communityed@hvcc.edu.
