CONTACT YOUR LEGISLATORS

The district has created this webpage in an effort to help community members who would like to contact elected officials about the impact New York State is having on public schools by continuing to cut state aid and failing to provide significant mandate relief.

The Board of Education shares the community’s frustrations as we are faced with cutting programs we know our students and community value. While we explore all ways to operate more efficiently, the district faces a third year of budget cuts, making it increasingly difficult to make reductions that don’t impact student opportunities.

With the district’s revenues largely fixed because of the state’s property tax cap law and more state aid cuts proposed by Governor Cuomo, the district has few options but to continue to cut spending.

We hope the following information is useful for community members who would like to contact their elected officials about the impact the state is having on public education. Thank you.

Writing a Letter to Elected Officials
Assemblyman Steven McLaughlin has recommended personal letters as one of the best way to impact elected officials. Below are two sample letters to help residents who would like to write a letter.

Challenges and Responses from District
If you would like to include additional information about the district’s financial challenges, here is some information that may be useful for letter writing.

  • Support a proposal by State Education Commissioner Dr. John King to reallocate money that Governor Cuomo has set aside for competitive grants for schools. Instead, Dr. King has called for most of that money to be shared by schools in need of additional aid. This would not increase overall state spending on education but change how it is distributed.

  • Reform the way New York State distributes money for schools. The current formula promotes inequality, rewarding more affluent school districts at the expense of smaller districts which are being pushed to the point of insolvency.

  • Provide mandate relief from New York State imposed mandates that drive up the cost of education.

  • Invite elected officials to visit the school district to see the impact cuts are having on education.
