Dear Secondary School Families:

Hello October! Thank you to all of our families who attended Open House on Wednesday evening. We had a really nice turnout for both the middle school and high school programs. Looking ahead to next week, school pictures are upcoming with Adirondack School Portraits - Tuesday, October 11 for the middle school and Wednesday, October 12 for the high school. Brochures with package options were sent home with your child near the end of September.  You can also order and pay for your photos online by visiting  www.adirondackschoolportraits.com and use the school code 69TAMHSX22.  Completed paper forms should be handed directly to the photographer with payment. A reminder that school is closed on Monday for Columbus Day.

Character Education: Congratulations to our Bengal Award recipients for the first month of school. Students are recognized by staff for random acts of kindness and/or being respectful, responsible, honest, demonstrating social intelligence, and good citizenship. Each student is recognized with a certificate which gets posted to our Character board and a chance to win a monthly prize.  Jade Miklacic is our Character Award winner for September!

Lost and Found: The Tamarac Secondary School Life Skills classroom is once again running the lost and found project. The students gather the lost items from the cafeteria and PE Classes and then wash and dry them. They photograph each item and upload it to a Tamarac Lost and Found website! This year to make this easier to search, we have created 4 slideshows. One for sweatshirts/shirts, one for sweatpants/pants/ one for winter coats/jackets/vests and one for lunch boxes, water bottles and shoes. This applies to both the elementary website and the MS/HS website. If you know your child is missing something, please email mshslostandfound@brunswickorg and give a detailed description, your child's name and grade or feel free to check out the website.

Homecoming: The Homecoming football game is scheduled for Friday, October 21 at 7pm. Before the game, high school students will enjoy a Pep Rally like no other - Freshmen vs. Sophomores powder puff football, junior vs. seniors vs faculty volleyball, 3-legged race, tug-o-War, pie eating contest, dizzy bat field goal competition and much (much) much! The homecoming dance is open to students in grades 9-12 from 6-9pm in the high school gym. Tickets for the dance are on sale for $15. See Ms. Rolston or Mr. Medved if you have any questions.

Tamarac Middle School Food Drive: We are kicking off our annual Tamarac Food Drive to support the Brunswick Cares Community Food Pantry. Please bring items in and give them to your Homeroom teacher. It is important to check expiration dates! Suitable items are canned veggies, canned or dry pastas, cold cereals etc. Please do not break-up the cartons of fruit in plastic cups, it makes it difficult for the pantry to store. This will run through October 28th. The homerooms that bring in the most food items in each grade level will participate in a make your own sundae Ice Cream Social on Thursday November 10th in the HS Cafeteria.

PSAT: We will be offering the PSAT on Wednesday, October 12. The PSAT serves as a preparatory exam for the SAT and as the test of entry for the National Merit Scholarship Competition. It is optional but all juniors (and sophomores who have completed or are currently enrolled in Algebra 2) are eligible to take the exam. Students must register in advance in the counseling center by October 5. A fee of $18.00 is required at the time of registration.  Please bring the exact cash amount or a check made payable to Brunswick Central School District. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s counselor.

RPI STEP Leadership Club: Tamarac Secondary is one of three local schools working in partnership with RPI to provide direct support for success. The RPI STEP Leadership Club will provide social and emotional learning, life skills and tools for resilience, enrichment and academic support, to prepare students to enter and be successful in college. RPI interns and student mentors will alternate between the middle and high school each Wednesday from 2:15-3:15pm. If interested, please reach out to your child’s counselor to see if they are eligible to participate in this great program.

Volunteer Emergency Services Recruitment: Steve LeBlanc, Rensselaer County Fire Safety Coordinator will be speaking with high school students on October 14 about what it means to volunteer in the community, the benefits of volunteering, potential future job opportunities, etc.. The presentations will coincide with The Battalion 2 Fire Depts. hosting Fire Prevention Day at the Elementary School.

Sincerely,

Ken Rizzo
