Tamarac Families,

We’re back!!  We had a fantastic first 2 days of school with the children.  There were many happy faces around the building, and any tears from our little ones just starting school dried up in a flash.

I would like to announce two recent additions to our district staff that will be a regular presence in the elementary school:  Brent Fane is our new School Resource Officer (SRO), and Rich Pogue is returning as a temporary K-12 Dean of Students for the 2022-23 school year. We are happy to have their support in assisting students and staff with necessary safety measures and positive behavior supports.

We greatly appreciate your patience as transportation kinks got worked out over the first couple days of school.  Construction on roads near the school, allowing extra time for pictures and extra hugs in the morning, as well as drivers taking extra care to ensure that the correct students were riding their bus contributed to some delays the first day.  By today, there was a huge improvement in arrival and dismissal times.

I would like to take the opportunity to remind parents of a couple of items before returning next week. First, this year, breakfast meals cost $1.00 and lunch meals cost $2.85. You can apply for free or reduced meals through our online application. Families may apply for free and reduced cost meal programs online. You may also complete a hard copy free and reduce cost meal program application and send it to Joy Wright at BCS Cafeteria.  This information may be found on our district website, as well.

Second, hats are generally not to be worn in the classroom or in the school building (except on special days where hat-wearing is specifically allowed). It is important that we have a reasonably unobstructed view of students’ faces during instruction and for safety and security purposes throughout the school building.  This is consistent with district dress code policy and can be found on page 17 of our handbook.  I only noticed a few students wearing hats the first couple days of school, and I was not looking to embarrass or disappoint students who were unaware of this rule and wore a hat with their back to school outfits.  However, moving forward, teachers will likely be asking students to remove hats if they are worn to school.

Lastly, we still have some backpacks and school supplies available to students due to a generous donation from the Werger family!  If your child is in need of a backpack and/or school supplies for the upcoming school year, please reach out to Mrs. Onorato at keonorato@brunswickcsd.org
